English teaching jobs in Hanoi are readily available. If the idea of doing the TESOL/TEFL course at AVSE in Hanoi and then perhaps staying on to teach in this truly magnificent city appeals to you, here’s a snapshot of what to expect.
Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital city, the centre of government and home to over 7 million people. From an economic perspective, it’s booming like the rest of Vietnam. Hanoi is a special place – arguably a place of unparalleled historical significance that dates back over 1000 years. With a ‘bohemian feel’, art and culture are on display for everyone to see, take in and enjoy. Hanoi has a real ‘buzz’. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can see classic examples – sometimes breathtaking examples – of the past, present and future within a matter of metres.
Hanoi has a temperate climate (for the majority of the year) – the traditional four seasons – and a pace of life that is noticeably slower than Ho Chi Minh City in the south of Vietnam. Local people in Hanoi are big on getting out and about and engaging in passive recreational pursuits. From early morning through to late evening you will see local residents enjoying ‘street food’, exercising, having a quiet drink of some sort or just ‘people-watching’ from one of the many outdoor coffee shops, bars and restaurants. Most evenings you will see dance classes and exercise groups doing their thing in public open spaces across the city, talented sketch artists plying their trade, handicrafts of all forms and sizes for sale in what seems like every street and much more. With a relatively flat terrain, Hanoi is a great place to explore on foot or by bicycle. There are more than 100 lakes dotted around Hanoi, all with their own story and unique ambience. The John McCain monument at the Truc Bach Lake is a reminder of how quickly life changes and the power of forgiveness. Hoan Kiem Lake has been the ‘passive recreation area of choice’ for many folks pursuing English teaching jobs in Hanoi, mainly because it’s surrounded by a terrific pathway that’s suitable for walking or jogging. It’s also stunningly beautiful.
While AVSE’S TESOL/TEFL course in Hanoi is purposely intensive with only 4 weeks to convey the skills and knowledge that are necessary for English teaching jobs in Hanoi and elsewhere, you’ll still have ample time to take in the best of what the city has to offer. Must-visit locations in and around Hanoi include the Old Quarter, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long and Ba Vi National Park (48 kilometres from Hanoi’s Central business district). Dong Xuan Market is also worth checking out, if only to observe the ebb and flow of business, Vietnamese style. Simply walking around streets and alleys in Hanoi is a brilliant way to spend time and it’s doable because the city is known for being safe. Having said this, at night it’s always wise to walk with a friend and follow the usual safety precautions. If nightlife is your thing, keep in mind you will need to front up to your TESOL class the next morning, the following places are well worth a visit: Bia Hoi Junction, the Bank Night Club, the Dragonfly Lounge Bar and Binh Minh’s Jazz Club. The Water Puppet Theatre also receives an ‘honourable mention’.
AVSE’s TESOL training centre in Hanoi is located in Ba Dinh District, close to the city’s famous ‘Old Quarter’. Ba Dinh District is a mix of residential dwellings, small businesses and a sprinkling of light industrial activity. There are plenty of grocery shops for essential supplies and places to grab a bite to eat. The local area is known for being safe and is well-serviced by public transport, which is very cheap by western standards. With a fully operational English language Centre in the same building as AVSE in Ba Dinh District, you will be immersed in a real school environment from day one and mixing with like-minded people who are already pursuing English teaching jobs in Hanoi.
Here’s a quick reminder. English teaching jobs in Hanoi are available 12 months of the year except for the two-week TET holiday, which is in mid to late January, the Vietnamese version of the Christmas / New Year holiday period. The TESOL programme at AVSE in Hanoi comes with ‘hands-on’ job support. We take this commitment very seriously. Once you’ve submitted your course related assessment tasks (typically in week 4), AVSE staff will work with you to locate the best English teaching jobs in Hanoi or elsewhere if that’s your preference. Most graduates of the TESOL programme at AVSE in Hanoi have a paid teaching job lined up within a day or two of finishing their course, such is the demand for teachers with quality certification.
